Being awarded this Residency at the home and studio of the acclaimed NW painter, Morris Graves, was a priceless gift. Here, I worked during the full moonlight, in strong sunlight as the breezes pushed the chartreuse duckweed from one end of the lake to the other, and under arching rain showers. Each place contains latent emotional forces I am interested in revealing. I am always seeking ways to describe the relationships between objects and the space they occupy. I look for pathways to wed both negative and positive space, exploring the inner relationship within each scene. This two weeklong residency inspired a series of paintings and drawings based on the mystical lake, a darkly mysterious lake that reflects the deep green forest both above and below the inky water's surface. During a great earthquake some seven hundred years ago, a crevice opened, swallowing portions of the surrounding mountains. Over time this basin filled in to become a lake. The dead and petrifying trees whose tops rose above the lake's surface, captured natural debris, becoming little islands. It is a place whose beauty is otherworldly, haunting. I was inspired to render this sense of the lake's quiet, moody beauty, as well as the potent natural forces that made it.
