PLAYA is an Artist's Retreat Center facility in Summer Lake, Oregon. The name refers to the playa, or caked and dried lake bed that is revealed with the lowering of the lake during the dry summers. Once a much larger body of water, it has over centuries, been a haven for migrating waterfowl and permanent residence for Western sage grouse. I was granted a Residency during the winter, at the liminal stage, before spring. Snow was still on the ground. These paintings are the interpretations of this high desert landscape. The studies and abstractions (Playa T-Z) are inspired by the patterns in the cracking playa and the colors inherent in the landscape.
